February MHHRA Newsletter
February 2005
Dear MHHRA Members:
As another year came to a close, it gave us time to pause and reflect on the months past -- our year in review. It was an interesting year for us as HR professionals and MHHRA members.
In September, Judge James Tamm (former judge and adjunct professor for the University of California), presented "Building Collaborative Relationships in a Pressure Cooker Environment." Participants were able to identify and see how their own behaviors could block their effectiveness in negotiations. Useful concepts to apply at work came from the "Radiant Transit Exercises." Members left the presentation armed with handouts to assist them in cultivating employee collaboration and to reduce conflict in the workplace.
Senior HR Leaders came together on October 28 at the MIT Endicott House in Dedham. This was a valuable opportunity to network with colleagues, interact with one another on "what keeps them up at night", and best practices. Brandon Melton, SVP HR, LifeSpan, was a superb facilitator as we discussed different perspectives of HR strategies and execution. We are grateful to Mark Manin and Linda Rappaport, Business Partners Chairs, who took the lead in organizing this event and obtaining Business Partner Sponsors for this elegant affair.
In November, MHHRA collaborated with MHA at their 6th Annual Summit "Into Thin Air: Conquering the Workforce Summit". This provided an excellent opportunity for members to learn how to survive the quest for sourcing candidates and keeping employees in the workforce.
Steve Salvo, Diane Bono, Mark Manin, and Denise McNulty worked diligently to update and revise the MHHRA website. We used Flyte New Media as our website developer. We look forward to celebrating our website debut in late January. Kudos to the website team!
Congratulations to Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) a nationally recognized public healthcare system focused on diversity and the community it serves. CHA, along with Donna Bonaparte, Senior HR Director, HR Operations, were showcased in the May/June 2004 issue of Profiles in Diversity Journal.
Donna Bonaparte and Jim Canavan, Program Chairs, along with their Program Champions, have come up with an exciting slate for the 2005 program year. Be sure to mark these events on your 2005 calendar. You won't want to miss the following:

2005 Massachusetts Healthcare and Related Employment Trends Industry watchers predict three major trends continuing through early 2005.
Trend One: despite a projected 32% of employees looking to change jobs within the next two months, many recruiters - 76% of them-report continued problems sourcing qualified candidates locally.
Trend Two: suggests problems staffing for growth will be compounded by a first quarter spike in employee attrition - 54% of employers reporting.
Trend Three: predicts it will take up to 20% longer to fill many positions with an average increase of 7% in cost-per-hire.
One thing is for sure: recruiters who are able to reach untapped nursing, allied health and related candidates in and around Massachusetts - at a time just before they are most active- will likely survive their counterparts who cannot. And, those recruiters who can deliver their employment branding and retention message at the same time- without spending a dollar more- will be able to resist trends, one, two, three.
