MHHRA President’s Message:

December 22, 2004

Dear MHHRA Members:

As another year comes to a close, it gives one time to pause and reflect on the months past -- our year in review. It has been an interesting year for us as HR professionals and MHHRA members.

In September, Judge James Tamm (former judge and adjunct professor for the University of California), presented “Building Collaborative Relationships in a Pressure Cooker Environment.” Participants were able to identify and see how their own behaviors could block their effectiveness in negotiations. Useful concepts to apply at work came from the “Radiant Transit Exercises.” Members left the presentation armed with handouts to assist them in cultivating employee collaboration and to reduce conflict in the workplace.

Senior HR Leaders came together on October 28 at the MIT Endicott House in Dedham. This was a valuable opportunity to network with colleagues, interact with one another on “what keeps them up at night”, and best practices. Brandon Melton, SVP HR, LifeSpan, was a superb facilitator as we discussed different perspectives of HR strategies and execution. We are grateful to Mark Manin and Linda Rappaport, Business Partners Chairs, who took the lead in organizing this event and obtaining Business Partner Sponsors for this elegant affair.

In November, MHHRA collaborated with MHA at their 6th Annual Summit “Into Thin Air: Conquering the Workforce Summit”. This provided an excellent opportunity for members to learn how to survive the quest for sourcing candidates and keeping employees in the workforce.

Stephen Salvo, Diane Bono, Mark Manin, and Denise McNulty worked diligently to update and revise the MHHRA website. We used Flyte New Media as our website developer. We look forward to celebrating our website debut in late January. Kudos to the website team!

Congratulations to Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) a nationally recognized public healthcare system focused on diversity and the community it serves. CHA, along with Donna Bonaparte, Senior HR Director, HR Operations, were showcased in the May/June 2004 issue of Profiles in Diversity Journal.

Donna Bonaparte and Jim Canavan, Program Chairs, along with their Program Champions, have come up with an exciting slate for the 2005 program year. Be sure to mark these events on your 2005 calendar. You won’t want to miss the following:

January 13 “The Role of HR Leadership: Responding to the Challenge”
February 10 “HR Networking & Social, with Best Practice Update”
March 31 “Aligning HR Closer to the Business from a CEO perspective”
April 21 “Cultivating a Diverse Workforce: A Toolkit that Works”
May 6 “MHA/MHHRA Labor Forum”
June 7 “Annual Meeting/Award Recognition/Election of Officers”

All programs are presented at The Conference Center at Waltham Woods, except the February 10th event, which will be held at the Spinnaker, Cambridge Hyatt Regency and the May 6th event, a the Sheraton Tara Hotel in Framingham.

It has been a productive year for MHHRA and an enormous undertaking for the Board. I want to personally thank Board members for their commitment, time, energy, and involvement.

As the New Year approaches, we encourage our members to become involved in MHHRA by attending programs and in joining one of our committees.

Wishing you and yours a world of love and light, where we all respect life and have it respected in kind, where tolerance encompasses us all, and peace is not a pursuit but a quiet reality. A quiet, personal peace to all of you.

MHHRA President
